Academies
Many residents have contacted me about recent announcements made by the Department of Education concerning academies and this Government's plan to deliver 'Educational Excellence Everywhere'. As you may know, I am passionate about education and I have consistently campaigned before and since the General Election to ensure that schools in Poole and Dorset receive fair funding and the necessary resources to deliver high quality education. As someone from a family of teachers and with three young children at local schools, I am committed to ensuring that we have the best education system possible and that deliver a good education for all pupils.
Specifically on academies, I understand that pupils, parents, and some schools are naturally cautious about the academisation process. I am not opposed to academies, and I believe that academies give teachers and school leader's greater autonomy, with controls over their own budgets and teaching methods. Teachers should have the freedom to teach creatively and try new ideas in the classroom, in order to engage with their students. These reforms are about helping them to make the most of their expertise and deliver the best possible results for pupils.
However, I understand the concerns raised and during a recent debate I sought assurances from the Minister about how this process will take, and asked for greater clarity and communication. I know that this will be forthcoming, and I am attending a further meeting in person with the Secretary of State on this very issue. Once more details are announced, I will be happy to talk directly with Headteachers, Governors, and parents to see how I can support them directly during this process.
I will continue to follow this important issue closely and ensure that the Government pursues what is in the best interests of our schools, both locally and nationally.
