Throughout Michael’s legal and professional career, he has regarded Pro Bono work as fundamental to ensure access to justice for all. His very first case as a trainee barrister was a Pro Bono case, and he knows the importance of Pro Bono work for both clients who need legal help, and for barristers as well.
When Michael was Solicitor General, he was keen to promote Pro Bono work, attending the All Party Parliamentary Group for Pro Bono events, and speaking to young lawyers about Pro Bono work and volunteering. He also chaired the Attorney General’s Pro Bono Committee where he was joined by representatives from across the legal profession including professional bodies, law firms, charities, law schools, legal associations, regional committees, the judiciary and others.
Having returned to practice, Michael has been recognised by the 2025 Pro Bono Recognition List of England & Wales as a barrister providing Pro Bono services.
Michael said:
I am delighted to be able to practice what I preach. I continue to offer Pro Bono work as part of my practice, working with the excellent charity Advocate.
