The Government is not proposing to regulate institutions teaching children for a short period every week, such as Sunday schools or the Scouts. The proposal will also not apply to one-off residential activities, such as a week-long summer camp. The Government is looking specifically at places where children receive intensive education out of schools, where children could be spending more than six to eight hours a week.
However, there are still very serious questions to answer and I took part in a debate on Wednesday 20th January urging the Minister to look again at this issue and clarify the position, especially in relation to Sunday Schools and summer camps. As someone who has volunteered in the past as a Sunday School teacher, and as someone who helps each year lead a Christian Summer Camp, I will continue to press to ensure that these should not need to be registered.
